The first weekend of May Meltdown took place at UofT turfs this past weekend, May 12-14. It featured a whopping 12 teams on the U18 girls side, and 4 teams in each of the other divisions. Notably, this is the first Senior level tournament that's been hosted by FHO in several years, and we are very happy to welcome back the senior division into the fold.
In the U18 boys final, Nepean took a lead in the first half on a penalty goal goal by Joshua Kuempel, but Lukas Kuhzarani of Chelsea managed to pop in a tying field goal half way through the second to send the final into a shootout. Nepean managed to edge the Chelsea team, winning 4-2 in the shootout.
In the girls U18 final, a very strong A&C Academy team took on the Guelph Cobras. Guelph managed to open up the scoring with a field goal from a player fresh of her first international caps, Jordyn Faiczak. It took A&C almost 20 minutes to answer back with a field goal by Madison Babineau, and then Anna Costanzo got a flurry of unanswered free play goals, giving her a hat trick to win the game, 4-1.
In the women's final, which was played 3/4 field and 7-aside, the Toros A team took on Toros B. Toros A dominated the first half - with goals from Kyesia O'Neale's, Jocelyn Mitchell and Angela Lancaster. Morgan Sleeth responded twice in the second half, but a final goal by Jocelyn Mitchell left Toros B in a 2 goal deficit to end the game. Toros A won 4-2.
The men's final, the first men's hockey to be played on the UofT turf after the 2015 Pan Am Games, was played by the Lions and CFHCC. After meeting earlier in the day and the veteran Lions edging the young CFHCC 4-2, the final was intense from the first whistle. After numerous opportunities from both teams Jagpreet (JP) Singh managed to covert the only goal of the game on a drag flick penalty corner to win the game 1-0 for CFHCC.
