During the week of May 17th to 23rd, 2021, Field Hockey Canada highlighted Masters across the country as part of their Team of Teams movement. During their celebration, Masters from Ontario were recognized as part of their Recognition of Excellence and as Masters Community Champions.

"Field Hockey Canada is proud to have a large group of Masters that spans across the nation. We recognize that their excellence from the club, to provincial, to regional, to national and even international level, surrounds us every day and greatly contributes to our programming."

FHO would like to highlight those from Ontario who were nominated by the field hockey community and recognized by FHC as part of this week.

Ilenna Tai

"Club involvement, motivation and memorable moment:

Ilenna is a member of Ontario's Durham Field Hockey Club which has a ladies' league and welcomes players of all ages. “I've found my youthful energy again playing with the fast, young players of the club. I really enjoy being treated by the young ladies as their peers. It has shaved years off my age! I am also on the club's co-ed team and we used to train with the Titans.”

Ilenna usually trains twice a week and felt confident enough to apply to Field Hockey Canada to be on the national Masters team. “Being able to represent Canada and playing in the indoor and outdoor masters world cups has been a dream come true.”

As for her ‘memorable moment’, “It was saving a penalty stroke within minutes of the start of our first game against the world champions Germany in the 2019 Indoor Masters Hockey World Cup, and later finding out that the German player who took the PS was a 3 time Olympian, wow what a feeling."

Ozias D'Souza

"Challenges and achievements:

Ozias explained that Masters players are self-funded, so overcoming the cost of travel to attend international and even domestic tournaments has had an impact and he has had to prioritize which events he plays in.

“Undoubtedly my greatest achievement with Masters Hockey was playing in the Indoor World Cup in Hong Kong for the Men’s 050 team, it was a very proud moment for me.”
