Remembering Ruth Johnston

Sadly Ruth (Mugs) Johnston passed away on July 29, 2019.  Ruth had been active in Ontario’s Field Hockey community over the past 40 years as a player, volunteer, umpire, technical officer, course conductor for umpire clinics, and umpire assessor.  A highlight of her career was serving as the site coordinator for the sport of field hockey for the 2001 Canada Games in London. During her umpiring career, she attained Regional certification and was active in local leagues (Springfield Hockey Association), high school leagues in whichever region she was living (Kitchener-Waterloo, South Western Ontario, and Halton Region), OUA, and had appointments to National Championships.  While living in London for several years, Ruth volunteered as umpire assigner for the WOSSAA high school region and helped to coach and develop umpires in the area. Over the years she acted as Umpire Coordinator for several OFSAA tournaments including last year 2018 in Burlington as co-coordinator. Ruth was not one to seek the spotlight, but was dedicated to developing and growing field hockey in Ontario and was always willing to step up when there was a need – she will be sadly missed.
